چکیده

Marvin, Ursula B., and Brian Mason, editors. Catalog of Antarctic Meteorites, 1977-1978. Smithsonian Contributions to the Earth Sciences, number 23, 50 pages, 39 figures, 2 tables, 1980.—During two expeditions to Antarctica (1976-77 and 1977-78), more than 300 pieces of meteorites were collected from a small area adjacent to the Allan Hills (77°S, 159°E) in Victoria Land. The 1977-78 meteorites were collected with special care to avoid contamination, and were transported in frozen condition to the Johnson Space Center, Houston, where they were processed under similar conditions to those used for the lunar samples. Eighty-five specimens of the 1977-78 collection, including most of those weighing over 100 grams, have been characterized, and are described in this monograph. Appendices provide a listing of these in numerical sequence and with significant data, and a table of chemical analyses. A summary of the published data on the ten meteorites of the 1976-77 collection is also included. OFFICIAL PUBLICATION DATE is handstamped in a limited number of initial copies and is recorded in the Institution's annual report, Smithsonian Year. Differences between Antarctic and non-Antarctic meteorites: An assessment

The discovery of a statistically significant number of meteorites in Antarctica over the past 20 years has posed many questions. One of the most intriguing suggestions that came up during the study of the Antarctic samples was that there might be a difference between the parent populations of Antarctic and non-Antarctic meteorites. This interpretation was put forward after the detection of a si...

Technology and Field Demonstration Results in the Robotic Search for Antarctic Meteorites

Robotic search for meteorites in Antarctica is an ideal test case for demonstration and field validation of planetary science rovers. Antarctica’s lengthy diurnal cycle, its harshness and its remote location present conditions and challenges similar to those encountered in missions to the poles of the Moon and Mars. This project has researched and developed the technologies and capabilities of ...

Terrestrial Ages of Antarctic Meteorites Based on the Thermoluminescence Levels Induced in the Fusion Crust

The fusion crust of eight Antarctic meteorite nds show natural thermoluminescence (TL) levels about 100 times higher than the levels in the fusion crust of freshly fallen meteorites, Dhajala, Jilin and Bansur. If it is assumed that this TL is due to cosmic ray received on the surface of Antarctica, the terrestrial residence times of the meteorites is calculated to lie between 10 10 years. Stric...
